If you're looking to pursue a career in Human Resources, commonly known as HR, it's important to understand the integral role that a HR function plays in an organisation.

Hiring managers will be looking to assess your awareness of the following:

#1 Ensuring employee satisfaction

A satisfied and happy workforce, is a productive workforce. Organisations are nothing without their staff and so it is vital that employees feel content and listened to. HR have the ability to connect with employees in a way that perhaps line managers do not. This can be achieved via regular catch ups or engagement surveys, with results being listened to and more importantly, actioned.

Ensuring employees are satisfied will reduce staff turnover, integral to any business.

#2 Organisational culture

Having an organisation where staff believe in and are onboard with the business objectives cannot be underestimated. A solid HR function has the ability to improve and develop the culture of an organisation by onboarding new hires or continuously training existing staff alongside deploying engagement and feedback tools.

#3 Onboarding new staff

New hires have the right to feel engaged and valued from the moment they step foot in any new job and HR enable this to happen by conducting a thorough onboarding process. This process can include educating new hires on the company culture, required behaviours, safety procedures and salaries and benefits.

#4 Conflict resolution

There will always be occasions when conflict can arise in the workplace. Allowing conflict to snowball can have a negative effect on the atmosphere in the workplace and lead to bigger issues down the line. A HR function will often get involved and act as a mediator between the parties involved, ensuring conflict is resolved in the best way.

Resolving these issues at root can lead to greater efficiency and the achievement of goals.

#5 Hiring the best talent

A key ingredient to a successful business. Recruitment of staff can be a lengthy process (trust us, we know). From initial job advertisements, shortlisting CVs, arranging and conducting interviews, offers, contracts and the compliance required to get your new hire started, it is integral that recruitment campaigns are as smooth and efficient as possible.

The HR function will finetune this process, working in tandem with hiring managers to create an effective journey.

#6 Handle disciplinary actions

Sometimes employees may not comply with standard company practices and it is down to the HR department to enforce disciplinary actions. These situations can often be sensitive so it is the job of HR to understand the employees point of view, find a common understanding and try to resolve them reasonably.
